Our Co-Founders Kristi Harrison and Matt McKeown

Kristi Harrison

  • Kristi Harrison is the co-owner of Highland Fitness and Wellness, a personal training studio gym and fitness community in Scarborough, Ontario. She and her business partner, Matthew McKeown, are committed to total fitness, which embraces work in the gym in conjunction with other forms of physical conditioning, mental wellness, and lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, hydration, and much more.

    At Highland Fitness and Wellness, we are evidence-based in our approach to exercise and health sciences. Kristi began her personal training and nutrition coaching practice in January 2019, following an extensive career in postsecondary education as an educator, mentor, and positions in senior-level administration. Kristi has trained with expert personal trainers, fitness and wellness coaches, and wellness associates across various disciplines in her fitness endeavours. She has worked with various female and male clients ranging from adolescents to senior citizens. Her work with clients has been in functional fitness, strength training, and improved body movement. Her clients have also included those with therapeutic rehabilitation needs (physical and mood-related), weight loss/eating habits, and elite amateur sports participation. She also has a strong interest in fitness for mature women.

    Kristi enjoys regular walking/light hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, and yoga. She is a Level 1 instructor in Animal Flow, a quadrupedal movement training modality, and focuses her leisure time on family, reading, knitting, cooking, and travel. She holds a B.A. from York University, an M.Ed., and a doctorate, an Ed.D, from the University of Toronto/OISE.

Matthew McKeown

  • Matthew McKeown is the co-owner of Highland Fitness and Wellness, a personal training studio and key community resource in Scarborough, Ontario. Matthew and his business partner Kristi Harrison are committed to total fitness, which embraces work in the gym in conjunction with mental wellness, other forms of physical conditioning, and lifestyle regimens on sleep, nutrition, and much more.

    At Highland Fitness and Wellness, we are evidence-based- and science-based. In the industry for over 12 years, Matt has trained with health and lifestyle experts, personal trainers, and combat coaches. He has worked with hundreds of clients ranging from senior citizens from the neighbourhood to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) athletes to clients with special needs around cognitive impairment, brain injuries, and autoimmune diseases.

    Matthew was a competitive grappler but now focuses his off-time on golf, which he finds to be a physical and mind-sharpening exercise. He holds a B.A. from York University and is completing an M.A. at Trent University in boxing and community.
